Sleep Sans Smartphone

It’s hard to put your phone down at the end of the day, but this inability may be leading to more complications with your health than expected. In a study conducted by the Daily Mail, 70 percent of people say they use Facebook within an hour or less before going to sleep at night. However, in order to get a good night’s sleep, studies show that tech users need a minimum 30 minutes of technology-free down time before bed. Doctor Paul Gringras suggests that the darker it gets outside, the more our bodies produce the sleep hormone melatonin. However, certain wavelengths of light can strain eyes and affect the system, specifically ones on the blue-green side of the spectrum. Gringras doesn’t suggest abolishing bedtime phone use entirely, but suggests a setting to filter out blue lights. The key to success with this concept involves creating a setting to automate the filter, says Gringras.

Developers are already playing around with this concept of removing blue light to adapt to the environment a computer is in. F.lux is a software that calibrates the position of the sun from wherever your computer is being accessed form and therefore adjust over the course of a few minutes to a few hours as to not disrupt how your eyes adjust. Although a fairly new application for computers and phones, people are reporting less frequent headaches around bedtime, more quickly falling asleep and a reduction on eye strain.

Shifting from blue and green light emissions to those of yellow and red are being proven to contribute in a greater length and cycle of sleep. Consider shutting off your phone at least 30 minutes before bedtime.
