When someone mentions “Disney,” what’s the first thing that comes to mind? Perhaps it’s Cinderella, the Rockin’ Roller Coaster or Tomorrowland. Rarely one thinks of Disney and associates technological advancements, but, in reality, Disney is a large employer of careers in IT, tech engineering, tech design and more.
A quiet yet quickly advancing company, Disney’s tech department has been releasing unique and thought to be impossible devices. Recently released is a tiny robot with the ability to climb walls. VertiGo, the wall climbing device, achieves it’s vertical ability with a rear propeller pushing the bot forward, while front propellers thrusts upwards.
Although Disney has yet to release their plans with their cool new toy, they have made it clear that it will be used as an entertainment device in the near future. Paul Beardsley, leader of Disney Research Zürich’s Vision and Sensing division says, “If the robot can make those transitions automatically, then you are a step in the direction of autonomous deployment, and that makes the technology more powerful.” Disney’s robot seems to be one step in some awesome future endeavors!
